Silverdale Natural Therapy | 4 Easy Ways To Get Kids Drinking Water

Summer is finally here. The coming days and weeks are destined to reach in excess of 38 degrees. It’s important to support ourselves, our kids and their little bodies. Making sure we can withstand the coming heat.

As a Bowen Therapist, I always tell my clients – especially after a treatment to drink water.

Water. Why it’s so important.

The body needs water to nourish and protect the brain. To regulate body temperature, and remove toxins.

Bowen Therapy is a form of bodywork that stimulates the body to heal itself. The natural healing process encourages hydration. Water is the inner medium in which this happens.

Our body is almost 50% water and is needed to heal and transport minerals for healthy metabolism.

For this reason alone it’s beneficial for kids to get into the habit of drinking water. Especially during this summer heat.

Why do kids need to stay hydrated?

By drinking and staying hydrated, it helps to avoid heat stroke, headaches, and cramping. This happens due to the loss of natural mineral salts and electrolytes through sweating and perspiration.

It’ll give them the advantage when dealing with fatigue and irritability during the hot spells.

Looking after ourselves and our little ones by staying hydrated is vital.

4 Easy Ways To Get Your Kids to Drink Water

1. Make water easily available:

Make sure your kids have their water bottles. Even their individual funky cups. Make it fun. Put stickers, have silly straws or put their name on them to help them get into good habits. You can also get the hose out. Little ones love water games. Especially when it’s hot. Kids love to be independent. By keeping a water dispenser handy; they can access it when they want or need it. Even a bowl of ice handy can keep them interested and hydrated.

2. Be honest and educate.

Explain to them how water is the best thing they can do for their body. Limit alternatives, so they recognize that water is essential for their wellbeing. It’s not necessary to be too strict, we all know kids will switch off if we are too heavy with restrictions. We want them to be motivated to drink water because it’s good for them.

3. Talk about the colour of their wee

Kids LOVE poo, bum and wee jokes. Let’s face it. The colour of their urine engages them. It also gives them an indication when it’s time to get guzzling. If it’s bright yellow. This means their body needs to more water to help it detoxify. It eradicates the things the body doesn’t need. The more you drink, the more transparent their urine. This is the best indicator the body is hydrated.

It will also indicate it needs water through waves of hunger.

4. Experiment with flavouring.

Sometimes kids won’t drink water because of the taste. This goes for adults too.

Putting flavor into the water encourages kids to drink it.

Lemon or homemade cordial, low sugar alternatives are best. Sugary drinks are best avoided. If anything, sugar will and does dehydrate the system. These are best avoided. They don’t count as the recommended daily intake.

I know a lot of people avoid drinking water because they don’t want to spend their lives in the toilet. When the weather is hot, it’s beneficial to get drinking for your wellbeing and help your children know that it’s important too.

It’s great for their little bodies and will the give them and you the stamina to withstand the coming hot days. Stay cool.
