What’s Iron Got To Do With It?

Lady Lying on her desk asleep. Silverdale Natural Therapy Iron Blog

Anaemia, the official medical term for low Iron in our blood. It’s very common.

Iron deficiency has several symptoms many of which can go unnoticed and be dismissed as something else.

Symptoms of low iron can include

  • Dizziness
  • Lethargy
  • Anxiety
  • Headaches and Migraine
  • Poor concentration
  • Pale Complexion
  • Low Immunity

Recently my daughter struggled with low immunity and constant headaches. These soon elevated into migraine headaches and anxiety. She became the kid who picks up all the “bugs” going around, spends days at home and sleeps a lot to combat the lethargy.

The migraines were the worst.

We went to the doctor on numerous occasions. Blood tests ensued. All were coming back “normal.

Through further research and investigation, and advise from our naturopath we tested the iron store levels in her blood. Testing a protein called Ferritin.

Low Iron was in fact the culprit. And so low, an iron infusion was prescribed.

Whilst the iron level in my daughter’s blood was “normal” – the protein ferritin was very low.

This is something to think about if you’re at your wit’s end and you’re experiencing the same issues.

The Role of Iron

The mineral Iron is responsible for creating the protein hemoglobin. This carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.  Without oxygen, lethargy results in no energy is being produced within the blood.

This happens within the Mitochondria of a blood cell. These little beauties convert food and oxygen into fuel that powers our cells.

It is also important to note that Vitamin C is needed to support the absorption of Iron.

You can buy some excellent Vit C supplements over the counter at your local Health food store. Make sure you chat with your naturopath to suggest which one is the best for you.

Tissue Salt and Iron Deficient Facial Indicators

Tissue Salts are effective remedies to support our bodies, mind and brains. Smaller than a blood cell, they are easily absorbed by the body.

Blood will only absorb things that are smaller than it. This is why tissue salts are so effective. They are also absorbed via the mouth and bypass the gut.

Tissue salts keep the body and mind balanced. Brilliant in calming the central nervous system.

Iron Deficiency can is seen on the face. Indicated with dark bluish indents in the corner of the eye and under the eye—pale completion and lips. Overall, dullness is seen in face and demeanour.

How to Increase Iron in Your System

When Anaemic, an Iron infusion maybe necessary. It can take up to 3 months for iron store levels to reach “normal” levels.

Iron Deficiency can also be supported by taking Ferr Phos ( Iron Phosphate) or Iron Chelate.

It’s essential to test for Iron stores within the blood rather than iron levels in the blood. So if symptoms persist, please see a doctor or naturopath to arrange for further investigation.

I know an iron infusion has proven very successful for my daughter and other clients. The results were almost immediate (within a week of the infusion).

Headaches and migraines disappeared as did the dizziness, lethargy and anxiety.

Tissue Salts such as Ferr Phos can help manage, as can other iron supplements. Ferr Phos is excellent in reducing inflammation and fever.

Suppose you feel the beginnings of a cold. Ferr Phos tissue salt is perfect for nipping it in the bud. You can read all about Tissue Salts and their benefits here.
